Director of football Damien Comolli was given the green light to invest all the money obtained from the sale of Torres to ensure this happened before the close of the transfer window later that day. He reportedly made unsuccessful moves for strikers such as Mario Gomez and Fernando Llorente before approaching Newcastle for Carroll.
Carroll had been a revelation in the first half of the Premier League season- his first substantial forrays into top flight football- and Newcastle were not keen on the idea of selling. The circumstances surrounding Carroll's eventual departure from Newcastle were controversial.
Officially, Carroll handed in a transfer request to push through the move when Newcastle were holding firm and rebuffing Liverpool's approaches. It was later claimed by a journalist who knows Carroll that Carroll had sent him text messages expressing his dismay at leaving his boyhood club, and suggested that Newcastle forced him into handing in a transfer request in order to placate the inevitable backlash from the Newcastle fans at the prospect of the club selling their young star.
Regardless, upon signing Carroll enthused "It's just a great feeling [to sign for Liverpool]. Liverpool is a massive club and it's nice to be wanted by a club like this When I knew it [Liverpool's interest] was real and that there was a chance for me to come here I knew it was a great opportunity and I had to take it. His first start for the club was the tie against F. Braga on 17 March in the Europa League, resulting in an aggregate loss. After a few weeks on the sidelines due to injury, Carroll scored his first two Liverpool goals in a victory over Manchester City on 11 April.
He spent much of the rest of the season on the sidelines due to knee problems. Carroll scored his first competitive goal of the season in the League Cup during a victory against Exeter City on 24 August He scored his first League goal of the season on 1 October , away at Everton in the Merseyside Derby as he slotted in a Jose Enrique cross from close range.
On 29 November , Carroll started against Chelsea in the League Cup quarter final tie at Stamford Bridge, having been left out of the starting line up for the club's previous two matches. Liverpool won a penalty early in the first half which Carroll took, however his fiercely-struck effort was straight down the middle and well saved by Chelsea 'keeper, Ross Turnbull. Carroll failed to hold down a regular place in the starting XI during the first part of the season as he struggled for form and goals.
He'd return for the season scoring 3 goals in 14 appearances which ultimately saw Newcastle get relegated to Championship. In the Championship the striker enjoyed the best goal scoring season of his career hitting the back of the net 17 times and having a hand in a further 12 assist in 37 games, his stellar performances would catapult Newcastle back in to the Premier League for the following season. He'd retain his form and would go on to be involved in 18 goals in 19 appearances in the Premier League as Newcastle finished in 12th position.
His Liverpool career would be largely unsuccessful with a goal tally of 11 in 58 appearances, however, he'd play two domestic cup finals in his second season at the club winning the League Cup against Cardiff City and losing to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.
The Englishman went on loan to West Ham United in and would sign for them on a permanent deal in the following season. His West Ham career has been blighted by injuries, playing an addition of 20 games twice in 6 seasons from , in that time has seen a return of 39 goals in games.
West Ham United Club Overview. Only nine goals from 47 first-team matches did not seem to represent good value for money. But big Andy persevered and got his reward in the middle of April when he headed late winners against Blackburn in the Premier League and against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final. He scored in the FA Cup final against Chelsea and was denied a second goal by a miraculous save. His improved form towards the end of the season earned him a place in Roy Hodgson's man squad for the Euro As soon as Brendan Rodgers took over at Liverpool it was abundantly clear that Carroll didn't suit his requirements.
Carroll took time to settle in at West Ham but wasn't helped by receiving a hamstring injury on his debut. Once recovered, however, he had a strong end to the season and ended up with a respectable seven goals after appearing in twenty-four Premier League matches.
As his loan-spell finished, West Ham and Liverpool appeared to reach agreement over a fee for a permanent transfer but were waiting for the player himself to agree to the move and also agree to the personal terms that were on offer. He rejoined his old club Newcastle on 8 August but failed to score in nineteen league appearances fifteen as substitute in his first campaign back there.
