Should i install debian

Thanks for taking the time to make this article. I normal use Debian for my cloud servers, I prefer over Centos for better Security. I was using Ubuntu only because it is easy to get going with drivers installed. But I find Ubuntu has changed so much and find it not as great as it use to be. I decided to try install Debian as my desktop and using your article help me get it the way I wanted it. I just installed Debian testing, this tutorial was extremely helpful.

Thank you very much for making my Debian experience better! You've mentioned iirc that your favourite Debian flavour is Xfce. One often sees people referring to programs such as the following, although offhand I don't know if they inlcude an Xfce compatible version:.

Dear average, thank you for your very good tutorial, they were very complete, it helped me a lot, thank you very much. Hi AverageLinuxUser, Just installed Debian 10 and this was perfect for getting me up and running and firing on all cylinders. Thank you for pointing out that this information is missing It's 15 Feb You can see it on the front page.

I will add this information to the page as well. One more question i hope you can help with. Keep up the great work. I actually has landed my distro hopping on this Debian Gnome Stable, and with tweaks on this page, i have i fell i have the linux i need, it does everything i need and simply just work.

Question: When Debian 11 will come, do i need to reinstall everything or can i just push update :. Thanks a lot!!!

Very helpfull particularly for a newbie like me : I think I found a small typos mistake in the section 12 regarding the ufw configuration. At least this is the way it worked for me. Sorry for my english, it's not always error free… you often suggest the use of Debian, reading your articles you appear as a debian supporter.

More than Canonical Ubuntu and Windows 10 had, in not a few cases. It worries me, because I think it may depend on the increasingly poor quality of Debian development, despite the widest development base among all linux distributions and its structuring in the 3 known levels stable, testing, unstable. No other linux distribution has these features and advantages, but the results leave many doubts… What do you think about it?

Thank you for the comment. I am not a security expert. I suggest you ask Quidsup. He is a cybersecurity expert. In my opinion, Debian is very safe especially for a regular desktop user. Regrading the information in that article, everything depends on how you count vulnerabilities and how severe those vulnerabilities are.

If I were you, I would not worry. If it makes you uncomfortable, use Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based distros. I am currently using Debian 10 and Mint My wife uses MX Linux I test various distro editions constantly.

And I don't use a firewall or a antivirus program. Linux is secure. When I used Windows I had security and virus problems continually. Debian is built as a server distro but can be used on a standalone desktop. I would take much of what is stated in that article against Linux with a grain of salt. It's Windows and Mac systems that are attacked, not Debian or Linux in general. I would like to see a few pointers about what to do to it after installation. Thanks P. I'm older so don't make it too complex.

Thanks for the request. Unfortunately, I cannot get my hands on Zorin OS right now. But I will try to cover it during this year. Most of the time, I find solutions to my problems right there in some of your videos.

I have a few questions for you:. No, I have enough experience to make any distro fit my needs. I just pick up the one where I need to spend minimum time to configure it for my needs. It is KDE Neon at the moment. Desktops Laptops Amazon List. During the day I am a scientist who uses computers to analyze genetic data. Debian Things To do After Install.

August 26th, March 16th, Hi AverageLinuxUser! March 17th, There is no need to enable drive cache for SSD. I recommend it only for HDD. Trim is enabled by default. I like gscan2pdf as a scanner. July 13th, July 5th, May 14th, Sorry, I'm looking information about the date of this article, where is it? May 6th, May 7th, Change the order so that Debian boots first. May 4th, Thank you very much for pointing out those typos. I have corrected them.

May 1th, Having said that, I have seen and experienced the most broken installations returned to a healthy state. The key there as everywhere else was patience. If you are patient, Debian will share her secrets one by one. Before starting, I would encourage you to take a blank page from a notebook, fill it with as much clarity on the different choices, ideas that are being presented. The more clear you are in your head about Debian installation to take place, the more easier it would be not just for now but for a long time to come.

So the first thing to know is —. Having clarity about target machine narrows down your choices and makes for easier troubleshooting as well as influencing the choices you make during the Installation process. The Netinstall CD is perfect for such scenarios. While Intel has been blamed for non-standard implementation I would suggest to stay away from other competing vendors such as Micron and others till the situation is not clear.

For e. If however you have plentiful memory than those two could be tried. For instance, I have competing desktop environments on my desktops as well as laptops and I can choose whichever I want to use at any moment in time. You can also mix and match applications from one desktop environment to other. How much space to dedicate depends upon personal preferences as well as what you want to do. For instance, while doing a server installation, the administrator may typically dedicate a separate dedicated partition for logs whereas for home users it might not be so much of a concern to give dedicated partition for it.

Having separate partitions gives better flexibility to grow as and when needed. While such tweaks can be done later, it is preferable that you plan ahead. Debian is not based on any other Linux distribution. That means that software available in Debian's repositories were packaged specifically for Debian. For contrast, consider Linux Mint, a distro based on Ubuntu , which is based on Debian. When you install an app, you may be two layers removed from the source.

Some Ubuntu software has tweaks, but much of it is the same as it ships in Debian. If you don't want to deal with figuring out where in the chain a bug appeared, running Debian can save yourself the hassle. When you install most Linux distributions, closed proprietary binary blobs come as part of the kernel.

If you have a computer that doesn't need such code to function, you may not want to add these unnecessary black boxes to your operating system. Debian is the largest Linux distribution that doesn't install this firmware by default. If you want it, you have to opt in. The same is true of Debian's app repositories. If you stick to the defaults, you won't accidentally install any proprietary code on your computer.

Debian has been around since That's only two years younger than Linux itself. Hundreds of Linux distros have come and gone over the years, before Debian has stood the test of time. With so many distros existing as part of the Debian family, there are millions of people invested in this project continuing to exist. That alone is a good reason to stick with Debian. Linux makes software free and accessible, but most distros assume you have access to a solid internet connection.

I know firsthand how limiting of a factor this can be. I had dial up when I first discovered Ubuntu, which made the idea of having to get all of my apps via downloads somewhat daunting.

Debian provides a DVD version that includes much of the software you can download from the repositories. This way you can download Debian somewhere where you do have unlimited internet access and set up your computer at home or the office later. Many Linux distros choose a preferred desktop environment. You're free to swap this interface out for another, but you're no longer getting the supported experience. Debian doesn't have any strong preferences. Whether or not we install Debian directly, most of us who run Linux use a distro somewhere in the Debian ecosystem.

The project's reach is broad and impacts millions of people. That's not to say that Debian is for everyone.
