Papier Mache for example sounds like a great idea but you may have to take a couple of months off work to do it! Although a very time consuming job, it can be done quite cheaply as all you need is some wallpaper adhesive and some old news papers. As you might imagine, this does not give a great finish and due to this would not be suitable for room spaces where you want to show off your flooring but it can be used in rooms where you are going to cover the floors with carpet or lino etc….

Using PVA Glue and Sawdust If you are in the process of sanding and re-finishing your floor, after the initial sanding you should save as much sawdust as possible in a container you can apply a layer of PVA adhesive to the gap.
Diagram of a filled floorboard Push the sawdust down into the PVA so it is level with the top of the board.
Wooden Strips This will need to be done before you sand your floor! Wooden strip knocked down between floorboards Flooring Filler or Decorators Caulk Another method is to fill the gap with either flooring filler, which comes in a light tan finish and will blend in quite well with the lighter stains and varnishes, or you can use decorators caulk to fill the gap.
Caulk or filler used to build up layers until gap is filled Draughtex and Stopgap Draughtex is soft and squidgy and comes in the form of a roll available in differing thicknesses for different sized gaps.
Stopgap floorboard gap filler An additional advantage of Stopgap is that once it has been fitted the natural shadow of the gap itself will make it almost invisible to the eye ensuring that the natural finish of your floor is not in any way compromised.
Before installing hardwood floors, it is important to acclimate the product to your home. Have the installer perform a humidity level test because either very high or very low humidity can cause bowing, splitting, and warping. Use the results to decide what flooring is best for your home. Before installation, the new wood planks should be unwrapped and allowed to acclimate or rest inside the house for seven to ten days.
Whether your floor is recently installed or old, it may take years for gaps to show. To help reduce that possibility, especially if your home has dry air, you may want to consider adding a humidifier to your furnace.
Smaller, single-room humidifiers can also help to minimize issues. How many there are, their size, and how stable the floor feels will determine how to fix them. Planks that have small gaps will need less repair than those with broader or too many voids, or if floors that are soft and bouncy. Keep an eye on cracks and spaces and note when they appear and whether they close up with a change in the weather.
If so, the void is considered normal and nothing to worry about. The handle of a screwdriver will work best for this. For advice on fitting your floor, read our article on how to fit laminate flooring. How concerned are you about disinfecting while cleaning? If you want to know how to fill gaps between wooden floorboards without the chance of different colours due to PVA, try adding wooden strips following these steps:.
First, cut strips of wood. For the best results, use wooden strips that match the colour of your floorboards. Use a soft mallet to hit the strip into the gap. As it is slightly larger than the gap, it will create an air and dust! Use an electric sander to level the floor, ensuring all the wooden strips are level with your floorboards. The following steps will fill you in on sealing gaps in floorboards thanks to the timber contracting and expanding over time.
Although it is cheap, it does not give your floor the best look, but this process is ideal if you plan to cover your floorboards with carpet or linoleum. Some floorboard sealing products involve permanent adhesives or silicone based sealants, but with its clever design all you need to fit StopGap and fill those pesky gaps once and for all is a pair of scissors and an old credit card.
No glue, no tools, no fuss. Other floorboard sealants would struggle to cope with irregular gaps or require you to buy more than one product, but the unique design of StopGap means it handles wonky floorboards with ease. By choosing the right colour for your floors you can ensure that once your StopGap is installed you never notice it again.
