The works in the recently created collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao complement the permanent collection of the prestigious Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and form the nucleus of an independent, coherent and widely representative selection of works created since mid-century. Such projects foster dialogue between art and the art institution, promoting and enhancing the new architectural spaces that depart from the discrete, "neutral" proportions of the traditional gallery.
In addition, other spaces in the Museum feature comprehensive selections of work by certain artists of singular importance in the history of 20th-century art, such as Joseph Beuys and Vasily Kandinsky, thus enabling the visitor to view their oeuvres in greater depth. Chronologically, The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of This Century begins with a diverse selection of masterpieces of European art from the first three decades of the 20th century.
A selection of works from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of New York and from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice allows one to appreciate the decisive role played by European avant-garde movements in the development of the art of our century. Works by the foremost representatives of Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism, German Expressionism, and Surrealism, among others, show how these movements broke with tradition and the constraints of the 19th century to create the basis for a new language of art that was to develop throughout the present century.
Hilla Rebay was the original curator and the first director of the museum. Guggenheim Museum opened October 21, It has stood since, with several restorations and updates, and remains one of the most instantly recognizable pieces of artistic architecture in the world. A major outstanding feature of its design is the iconic shape, a series of concentric rings which is larger at the top than at the bottom.
The other Guggenheim building locations, in Venice, Bilbao, and Abu Dhabi, also feature iconic and eye-catching construction designs. Unlike other museums, for example the Louvre which features huge collections of art that have been painstakingly restored from bygone centuries, the Guggenheim museums feature newer artistic pieces.
Its displays cycle a variety of special exhibitions throughout the year, with only newer forms — Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and Contemporary art. This patchwork painting style lends a unique textural quality to interior surfaces, which you can feel if you run your hands over the parapet, for instance. Wright wanted the walls to emulate the tilt of an easel in order to best display works of art.
He envisioned leaning paintings against the wall rather than mounting them fully. In order to protect the works, he added steep slopes between the gallery floor and the gallery walls to separate the audience from the art. He also installed skylights in the galleries to light the art naturally. Neither of these notions ended up being used for long—works are now typically mounted on the walls directly, and the skylights were replaced with artificial lighting after the inaugural exhibition in
